I am an interdisciplinary scholar and professor in the Disaster and Emergency Management at Royal Roads University, in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. My research explores how the use of digital technologies and social media are shaping the cultural characteristics of emergent response to disaster and the way these types of events are witnessed. I use arts-based research methods in my practice. Prior to moving to an academic position in 2009, I had a long career with the Canadian Red Cross and work on responses to wildfires, floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, tornados, hurricanes, and ice storms.
